Happy Ending: Amit Has Come Home! (09/10)
Amit Kadosh, the seven-year old girl who underwent a complex bone marrow transplant in the US, has returned home with her family to Israel. Amit's father announced that the bone marrow transplant she underwent a year and two months ago has been declared a success, and the family has come home following conclusion of treatment at Duke University Hospital in North Carolina.

Amit Kadosh was diagnosed with leukemia in September 2008, shortly after she entered first grade. Since then, her parents - Naomi and Yuval - have been engaged in a battle for her life, together with Ezer Mizion, which organized a national bone marrow drive on her behalf in order to find a suitable donor.

Over 62,000 blood samples were collected in the drive to save Amit's life. This was absolutely unprecedented - that so many people rallied in response to the call, coming to give a blood sample and joining Ezer Mizion's bone marrow registry.

Despite these massive efforts, not a single donor from Amit's drive was found to match her genetic makeup.

Several months later, Amit's parents got word that a match was found in North Carolina. They packed their bags, leaving their home in Kfar Saba, Israel and flew to the USA, to Duke University Hospital.

Shortly after their arrival, in early August 2009, Amit underwent the transplant. For a period of a year, the family and friends have all waited anxiously to hear that the stem cells were well accepted and that no cancerous cells remain in Amit's body. Now the the good word has been received: Amit's condition is excellent, and she is in an advanced process of recuperation from the illness.

"All of the test results indicate that the source of cells in Amit's body is from the transplanted stem cells," her father relayed. "Amit's body is free of cancerous cells. This is truly wonderful, marvelous news, of course. The grand dream of going home to a normal life has become a reality".

The day following their landing in Israel the Kadosh family came to visit Ezer Mizion's guest home for children with cancer that had been their home away from home while Amit was undergoing treatment before her trip to the US. They expressed warmest thanks to Dr. Bracha Zisser, Director of the Bone Marrow Registry and Cancer Patient Guest Home, and to the Ezer Mizion staff for their support throughout the difficult period they endured. "Your professional guidance and moral backing every step of the way was a beacon of light in the darkest a tunnel that can be imagined. You kept us going at the most difficult moments." Warm memories were aroused of the desperate search for a matching stem cell donor and the solidarity it generated among people throughout Israel in their shared wish and united effort to save Amit.

Seeing Amit healthy and vibrant was a source of great encouragement to Ezer Mizion's staff and volunteers in their constant endeavor to bring hope and strength to people in their battle with cancer.
