Menashe and Marc Meet (06/10)

When 20 year old Canadian born Menashe Grunfeld heard about the stem cell donor recruitment drive to save the life of little Dor Lavie, he decided to join Ezer Mizion's Bone Marrow Registry. Together with a group of his friends - foreign students studying in Jerusalem - they made their way to Ezer Mizion's blood sample collection station, each one hoping that he would be the one to save the child's life... They rolled up their sleeves to give the sample of blood that would verify if they were a match.

The lab testing of Menashe's blood sample was sponsored by Alan and Nicole Samson and he became part of their Donor Pool in Ezer Mizion's Registry.

Menashe and his friends did not get a phone call to tell them they were a match for little Dor, who unfortunately passed away before a matching donor was found. But the longed for call did come several months later. Menashe was invited to come to Ezer Mizion for further testing and an evaluation to confirm donor compatibility for a different cancer patient. The tests came out all positive and Menashe waited for the transplant center to set the date for the stem cell collection.

Meantime, on other horizons, happy things were happening: Menashe got engaged! The appointment for the collection was scheduled for a week before his wedding. Very graciously, Menashe came and donated his precious stem cells, not knowing the identity of the little boy from the USA for whom his generosity of spirit meant the difference between life and death.

The transplant was performed on March 31, 2008 and 9 year old Marc Weinstein began his journey on the road to recovery.

At the end of 2009 identity release forms were signed by both sides who really wanted to meet. In early June 2010, Menashe flew with his wife from Israel - where they live - to New Jersey, where they celebrated Marc's 12th birthday, together with Marc's extended family.

They also celebrated Marc's rebirth two years ago with the lifesaving transplant that the Alan and Nicolle Samson Donor Pool facilitated, together with Menashe Grunfeld.
