| Cancer is a frightening disease that most people try to avoid even thinking about. But often, playing "ostrich" is counter-effective. Several types of cancer have a high chance of being cured if caught in time - and all it takes is a standard test to catch the early signs. One of these types is colon cancer.
Ezer Mizion hosted an awareness-raising evening at Ezer Mizion's Jacob Fried Building in Bnei Brak on the subject of colon cancer prevention. The response was quite impressive, with over 200 people attending, with a second similar event planned. Until the program commenced, the audience visited the information booths set up in the lobby by the various Kupot Cholim (health service providers), the municipality, Ezer Mizion's Malka Hager Fitness Center, and Tzipporah Fried Alzheimer's Support Center.
The evening was opened with greetings by Chananya Chollak, International Chairman of Ezer Mizion. He was followed by Dr. Kenneth, Department Head at Maccabi Kupath Cholim Central Region. Dr. Kenneth spoke about early signs of the colon cancer, the contributions of modern medicine in providing treatment, and most importantly - the relatively simple process of testing periodically for early diagnosis of the disease.
A dietician on the staff of Klalit Kupat Cholim discussed dietary measures that can easily be incorporated into the daily menu to help prevent development of intestinal cancer. The highly successful evening was the result of a collaborative effort of Ezer Mizion, the various Kupot Cholim and the municipality, who were united in one goal - to help the community prevent colon cancer. A second similar evening is scheduled. "If even one life will be saved as a result of these evenings," says Edith Edelstein, Projects Coordinator at Ezer Mizion's Malka Hager Fitness Center, "it will all have been worthwhile!" |
