Personalized Donor Pool

"Whoever saves one Jewish life
it is as if he had saved the entire world"

For many people suffering from cancer and other life-threatening diseases, a stem cell transplant offers the only chance for survival. Ezer Mizion's Bone Marrow Donor Registry (BMDR), today the largest Jewish bone marrow donor registry in the world, was established in 1998 to find genetically-compatible donors for patients in need of transplants.

In September and October 2008 Ezer Mizion's BMDR facilitated another eighteen life-saving transplants!

Thirteen of these transplants were made possible thanks to funding for initial testing of blood samples provided by the following personalized donor pools (see box ).

What is a
"Personalized
Donor Pool"?

When a match is sought for a patient in need of a stem cell transplant, the blood samples at Ezer Mizion's Registry are checked to determine compatibility between the patient and the potential donor's blood.

Further testing reveals whether there is a complete match so that a stem cell transplant can indeed take place, thereby saving the sick person's life.

Initial lab testing for each blood sample costs $45/£22/180¤. A personalized donor pool - which can be named in honor or in memory of a loved one - is established by sponsoring the lab testing of blood samples of potential stem cell donors, enabling them to join the Registry.

Upon its initial testing, every blood sample is given a tracking code. The sponsors of personalized donor pools are notified when a lifesaving stem cell transplant is carried out from their pool, sharing the exciting news that they have actively helped save a person's life.
