The Little Policeman (01/10)

Dream-come-true for eight-year old cancer patient

"When I grow up, I want to be a policeman," says Chai Malkie, an eight year old boy in Israel.  Like so many children, Chai dreams of chasing the bad guys when he becomes a man but, unlike most children, Chai has been diagnosed with a serious brain turmor. Chai's parents tremble each time he utters the words When I grow up...

His dream came true when Ezer Mizion arranged for him to be Policeman for A Day. In full glory, he was picked up from Oranit, Ezer Mizion's Guest Home for Children with Cancer, by two police officers in a patrol car and driven to Petach Tikvah Police Station where he was given a police uniform just his size! The entire unit  greeted him upon his arrival and he was given a full tour of the station. How important he felt at being allowed to activate the police remote control robot.

But policemen do not spend their days touring. There's work to be done. Chai joined his new friends and, together with police-dogs, helped search for drugs that had been especially set up for Chai's   Day As A Policeman. As an official member of the force, he was permitted to ride the sleek police horse through the streets,  enjoying the envious stares of children passing by.

This very special day ended with a presentation during which Chai was given a police identity card, emblem clips from all the police units, real handcuffs and a group picture with all the policemen at the station.

"I always wanted a police uniform," Chai told his mother excitedly, "and now, after I waited a long, long time, I finally was able to be like a real policeman. It was a blast!"

"This project is unusually moving," commented Dr. Bracha Zisser, director of Ezer Mizion's Guest Home for children with cancer. "I want to thank the Petach Tikvah Police Force for going far beyond the call of duty and devoting a significant chunk of time to partner with us in helping sick children and their families."
