This is the story of Gal Cohen, an 18 year old girl from Kiryat Gat, Israel, who has aplastic anemia and is fighting for her life. She is urgently in need of a bone marrow transplant in order to survive. Her story has succeeded in striking a chord in the hearts of many. It has also sprung them to take action.
Ezer Mizion coordinated a Bone Marrow Drive to rally new potential stem cell donors for its registry in Israel. In the course of the two day drive, hundreds of people from across the country came forward to give a blood sample in the hope of saving Gal.
Ezer Mizion's Registry is the largest Jewish donor registry in the world and provides a response for Jewish patients in Israel and throughout the world. As of now, the registry numbers over 475,000 active donors. The registry has to date has made over 2,000 matches and facilitated over 500 lifesaving stem cell transplants for patients around the world.
The Registry serves as a vital resource for Jewish cancer patients in need of stem cell transplants, and serves as an "insurance policy" for Jews wherever they may be.
Expansion of the registry will result in more stem cell matches and many more transplants, saving the lives of many more patients.
