Open Health Awareness Evening: Coping with Diabetes (06/09)

In a joint project of Ezer Mizion and the Israel Diabetes Association, a health awareness evening was held for the general public on the subject of "Identifying and Preventing Diabetes". The gathering took place at the Ezer Mizion's Jacob Fried Building and was geared for women ages 50 years and up.

At the onset of the evening, booths were set up introducing the guests to a wide variety of information, such as:

  • Ezer Mizion's Malka Hager Fitness Center programs, activity schedule and how to join.
  • Ezer Mizion's Geriatric Services Division offered an overview of existing services and explained how to take advantage of the benefits to which senior citizens are entitled.
  • Maccabi Health Care provider presented a roster of services and entitlements under their Service Plan.
  • Pharmaceutical companies explained about available diabetes medications, their features, differences and advantages.

As part of this preliminary display, there was also a station at which glucose tests were administered at no charge, to locate people at risk of developing diabetes. Those identified as being at risk were referred for more comprehensive, professional testing in the framework of their local health care provider.

The main program opened with greetings delivered by Rabbi Chananya Chollak, chairman of Ezer Mizion, followed by an enlightening lecture given by Professor Motty Ravid, Director of the Ma'ayanei Hayeshua Hospital and president of the Israeli Diabetes Association, on the subject of "Risk Factors for Diabetes and Multiple Sclerosis."

At the conclusion of the evening, the participants were given an opportunity to hear about and to try out exercise classes and a "laughter for health" workshop, both of which are held regularly at Ezer Mizion's Malka Hager Fitness Center. After having a taste, many of those present signed up to join these classes on a steady basis, for their pleasure and fitness.

A similar event was also hosted for men.
