"Hearing Awareness" days for senior citizens were recently held at Ezer Mizion's Bnei Brak headquarters and at its Petach Tikvah branch. The events were part of the Chayil program - a joint health promotion project of Ezer Mizion and Eshel-Joint - designed to raise awareness of health issues among older people and to provide them with the tools to develop a healthful life style.
Physicians who are specialists in hearing spoke at the events, and guidance on hearing aids was given by the representative of a hearing institute. Hearing and vision examinations were also available.
Dr. Mordechai Himmelfarb, from Ichilov Hospital's Hearing Institute, spoke about the importance of proper diagnosis of hearing problems because of the influence of interpersonal communication, which is one of man's basic needs, on quality of life. "A decline in the quality of hearing severely damages the elderly person's quality of life and isolates him for society," he noted, adding. "Sometime, a problem that can be corrected medically is ignored out of the mistaken belief that it cannot be remedied."
