Mazal Tov - the Lucky Winner! (09/12)
Nofer Mazal (24) a secretary at the Barzilai Hospital's Mammography Institute in Ashkelon, was gifted with the privilege to save a life.

This week, Mazal got the wonderful news that the bone marrow sample she gave a year ago in a stem cell donor recruitment drive that took place at the hospital led to her saving the life of a leukemia patient in need of a transplant.

"The donor is very emotional about what's happened. She talked about the joy and feeling of satisfaction that donating her cells brought her, in spite of the uncomfortable procedure she underwent in the process," a spokesman at the hospital said in Mazal's name. "We call upon anyone who can donate bone marrow to respond to Ezer Mizion's drives and save Jewish lives!"

All it takes to join the Bone Marrow Donor Registry is a simple blood test or buccal swab. Ezer Mizion coordinates frequent donor recruitment drives to expand its pool of stem cell donors.

A recruitment drive took place about a year ago at the Barzilai Hospital. The drive's goal was to find a matching stem cell donor for a cancer patient. Numerous employees at Barzilai gave a sample and entered the Registry.

Mazal, who took part in the drive, was the lucky one found to be a match for one of the patients. This week, the transplant, which took place three and a half months ago, was deemed a success.
